Out of all the days so far, this one was mentally tough since my four-hour shift was split into two parts. The first two hours were spent on inventory, and the second part was at the reference desk.
For inventory, our librarians prefer to use pen and paper. My task was to go through three rows of children’s books to confirm that the books were present and to recommend if any needed to be replaced due to damage or withdrawn because they were not being checked out often. With the high volume of books, it took me about two hours to get through 30 pages. This also gave me opportunities to interact with kids who needed help finding books.
The second half of my shift was at the reference desk. This time, I was the only one in the front seat, and Kelly was shadowing me. Patrons were very kind, and I was able to help with locating books as well as assisting with the printer. For the most part it was positive feedback and the areas of improvement were based off me knowing the questions and not based off my behavior. I also had a run in with a Patron who is banned so it was interesting seeing Kelly deal with that and the Policy that is implemented. He was a little hostile and was worried that he was going to attack her and I would have to interfere. Luckily everything went well and it was good experience me seeing the dark side of working the Library.
Image: This is the inventory sheet I was assigned. I checked the box if the book was present, marked an “X” if it was missing, and wrote an “R” if it needed replacement.
