Today was divided into three parts during my shift. The first part was the Cozy Story Time, led by Ingrid, who you can see in the picture. This was a one-hour event that included a song, a story, and a pirate-themed craft. The kids were really engaged, and it was interesting watching how Ingrid managed to keep their attention, there's a specific rhythm to leading story time that seems simple until you actually try to do it yourself. You have to gauge when kids are getting restless and pivot quickly, maybe throw in an extra song or adjust the craft difficulty on the fly. I'm starting to pick up on the little techniques each librarian uses, like how some use different voices for characters while others focus more on physical gestures and props.
The second part of my day involved weeding books in my section, which is JUV. I went through about 60 books in three hours, and my supervisor will review whether I selected the right books to withdraw. It's a weirdly difficult task because you're constantly second-guessing yourself, does this book deserve another chance even though it hasn't circulated in five years, or is it just taking up space that could go to something kids would actually read? Some of the books I pulled were in rough shape, but others were just dated in content or illustration style in ways that made them feel irrelevant to today's kids.
The final part was handling reference by myself, which was exciting because Kelly trusted me with this task. The patrons were super nice and most of the questions were around tech, printer jams, forgotten passwords, the usual. There's something satisfying about solving these problems independently without having to check with someone else first, even if they're relatively straightforward issues.
